Short answer: A jogging stroller needs fixed front wheel, air tires, and a hand brake. What to check, and why a regular stroller is not safe to run with.

Jogging Stroller Buying Guide

A jogging stroller is a three-wheeled, fixed-front-wheel stroller built to move fast with a child aboard. A regular stroller is not a safe substitute for running. This guide covers the three features that separate the two, and how to choose.

The three non-negotiables

  • Fixed or lockable front wheel. A swivel wheel wobbles at speed and can catch. For running, the front wheel must lock straight.
  • Air-filled tires. Foam and solid tires transmit every bump to the child and your arms. Pneumatic tires absorb it.
  • Hand brake and wrist strap. A brake you squeeze from behind, plus a strap around your wrist, stops a runaway on a hill.

What else matters

  • Suspension. At the frame or wheel, it keeps the ride smooth past a walk.
  • Recline and age. Most jogging strollers are rated from about six months, when the baby holds its head up. Check the stated minimum age; a newborn needs a flat bassinet, not a jogger.
  • Weight. They are heavy by design. If you lift it often, check the fold and the heft.

When you do not need one

If you walk, not run, a full-size or all-terrain stroller with bigger wheels covers park paths without the weight. A jogger is worth it only if you actually run several times a week.

Safety while running

Stay on smooth, even surfaces, use the wrist strap every time, and never hang a bag on the handle. The stroller safety guide lists the checks that apply to every stroller. Mind the sun and the harness on longer runs.
