Short answer: Balance bike or training wheels? What published research and parent reports say about which teaches balance faster, and when each one still makes sense.

The short answer: balance bikes tend to get children riding independently sooner, and the best available evidence points that way — but the evidence comes from a small number of studies with real limitations, and fit matters more than either tool. Here is what the research actually says, and where training wheels still make sense.
What the research settles about learning age
Two peer-reviewed studies from the same Portuguese research group carry most of the English-language evidence on this question, and both compared balance bikes against bicycles with training wheels directly. They point the same way: children who started on a balance bike reached independent cycling sooner — an average of 4.16 years against 5.97 for training wheels across 2,005 parent responses in the 2022 survey, and 100% against roughly 77% of 50 children riding independently after six sessions in the 2025 intervention.
That is the whole finding this decision rests on. Study design, sample sizes and the objections peer reviewers raised are on What Research Says About Balance Bikes — read that page before treating any of these numbers as settled.
The limitations, stated plainly
Both studies have constraints that matter when you read those numbers:
- The 2022 study is a parent-reported online survey, not a controlled trial. Families choose their own tools, so more cycling-involved households may be over-represented.
- The 2025 study is small — 50 children, all from one region — and peer reviewers specifically questioned whether its groups were equivalent at baseline and whether the sample could support its conclusions about body composition.
- Neither study measured long-term riding skill, safety, or enjoyment. They measured how quickly children reached independent cycling.
- The literature is young and concentrated in a handful of research groups. This is not a settled question.
"Balance bikes get children riding sooner" is a defensible summary of the current evidence. "Balance bikes are proven better in every way" is not.
Fit decides more than the tool
Neither bike teaches anything if the rider cannot reach the ground. Match the seat height to your child's inseam — the lowest seat position should sit at or just below the inseam, with a slight knee bend at the ground — before comparing approaches. Our balance bike by age guide walks through the measurement, and the balance bike size chart shows published seat ranges across current models.
Training wheels also introduce a specific fit problem: they raise the effective ride height and tilt the bike, which changes the geometry the child is learning on.
When training wheels still make sense
- Hand-me-down reality: if a pedal bike with training wheels is already in the garage, it will still get a child riding — just later, and with a wobblier base.
- Older starters: a 5-year-old who has never ridden may tolerate the "big kid bike" framing of training wheels better than starting on a toddler-sized balance bike.
- Transition aid: some families use the balance bike first, then training wheels on the pedal bike, then remove the wheels. The research supports starting with the balance bike, not skipping it.
A realistic timeline
The 2022 survey puts average independent-cycling age at just over four years for balance-bike starters — but that is an average across thousands of families, not a schedule. Children who start striding around 18–24 months typically ride a pedal bike somewhere between 3 and 5 years, depending on practice time, terrain, and temperament. Any product or program that promises a specific number of weeks is selling you something.
The bottom line
Start with a balance bike that fits, ride it often on safe ground, and move to a pedal bike when the child can glide confidently with feet up. Training wheels are a fallback, not a failure — but the evidence says the balance-bike route is the faster one.
